ABOUT

Community, collaboration & creativity

Mission

Initially created at West Virginia University to support student organizations within the Reed College of Media, the Student Media Coalition is busy connecting the next generation of creators, communicators and community organizers.

Higher-ed fosters a distinct need for in-person and digital engagement:

SMC fosters collaboration over competition through events, content production, audience building, sponsorships and industry resources.

The Student Media Coalition is also in the midst of restructuring and relaunching this semester, Fall 2021. Follow @studentmedia_co, join our mailing list under the 'Let's Connect' tab and email us studentmediacoalition@gmail.com

Our Story

From 2018-2019, SMC founder Maura Flynn and advisor Kristen Uppercue served as co-presidents of WVU's chapter of Her Campus-- an international organization and publication that fosters feminist organizing.

At the time, there were five writers and no leadership board; in just two semesters, the pair traveled with teams to College Fashion Week, managed a publication of 25+ articles/week, facilitated partnerships with The New York Times and Diet Coke, held three-five meetings and events per week and grew the team to 100+ members.

Flynn and Uppercue were inspired by the infrastructure of Her Campus' parent company that provided critical opportunities and a network of over 400 chapters across the world.

Through the Student Media Coalition, that inclusive approach to community, resource-sharing and collaboration can continue to any mobilizing effort by building content reach, social media skills, operations and logistic trainings and beyond.
